Rich Chocolate Carmel Brownies (pg. 42)

 

Ingredients:

 

1 package devils food or chocolate mix

1 cup chopped nuts

½ cup butter or margarine (melted)

1 cup evaporated milk (divided into 2/3 & 1/3 cups)

35 light caramels (unwrapped )

1 cup chocolate chips

 

Directions:

 

Combine cake mix & nuts in a large bowl; stir in butter.  Stir in 2/3 cup evaporated milk (batter will be thick). Spread ½ of batter into a greased 13 x 9 pan, bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes at 350 degrees.  Combine caramels & remaining evaporated milk in small saucepan and cook over low heat stirring often for about 10 minute.  Sprinkle chocolate chips over baked batter as soon as it comes out of the oven.  Evenly pour melted caramels over top.  Drop the remaining cake batter, by heaping teaspoon, over caramel mixture, spreading batter a bit if there are big gaps.  Bake 20-25 minutes.  Top layer will be soft.  Cool completely in pan before serving.
