Cookbook Title: HELP YOURSELF! THERE'S A GOD'S MIGHTY PLENTY
Item ID: | 001547 | Abstract: | Help Yourself! There's a God's Mighty Plenty is a collection of recipes and reminiscences from two Essex County, Virginia, African-American families. Spanning 150 years and five generations, it contains 368 recipes from 100 family members and friends. Recipes run the gamut from traditional African-American soul food to nouvelle cuisine to vegetarian and wholefoods cuisine. Numerous anecdotes and stories place the recipes in the context of their times and usage. The title of the book is borrowed from the greeting and welcome to the table extended to family and friends by an ancestor who was born in 1846. The comprehensive introduction and the histories of both families tell the story not only of these particular families but of African Americans in the rural south. The foreword was written by Howard Dodson, Director of New York City's Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, one of the largest repositories of black research materials in the world. The book's cover artwork and section dividers feature adinkra symbols from the Akan people of Ghana. Profits from book sales will be used to support various projects that promote and preserve African-American history and culture. Help Yourself! There's a God's Mighty Plenty is the winner of a Special Merit Award in the 2000 Tabasco Community Cookbook Awards Competition. (Click the cover to view the award.)
